When we built our house in 1979, it was sited on a steep hill that had previously been cow pasture. There wasn't much vegetation at all, and even less soil. Most of it was rock, shale, and clay. We began hauling in soil from elsewhere on the property, and over the years the gardens began to take shape.

Because we dug into a hillside to build, we were left with steep, rocky banks that were impossible to do anything with. So, over the years, I began collecting the rocks and mortaring them in place, saving little open spots to plant in.

I have not labeled any of the plants, as that would take too long!

The pink stuff on the left is Saponaria ocymoides, which blooms in May. In front of it are the white blooms of Cerastium tomentosa. In the other pic are the blooms of the Oriental lily 'La Reve.'  I have many Oriental lilies throughout the gardens. They bloom in August, and their scent is amazing. Some of the most beautifully and heavily scented plants I've ever run across.
